What is endoscopy?
An endoscopy procedure allows the doctors to see directly inside your organs. Many times the organs that are viewed are the colon, stomach, or airways.

Greenview Regional Hospital’s Endoscopy staff is skilled and happy to serve you using the latest technology. As a matter of fact, Greenview Regional Hospital is the only hospital in the area that uses Capsule Endoscopy.

The Endo-capsule is a noninvasive way for medical professionals to view your upper GI and small bowel. The Endo-capsule is a pill with a tiny camera in it that takes thousands of pictures of possible problem areas as it travels down your gastrointestinal track. The Endo-capsule is just one way that Greenview’s Endoscopy Department is willing to assist you.

Because we want to make sure that your procedure is as comfortable as possible, we try to keep the same nurse with the patient pre, post, and during you procedure when at all possible. We also make sure that the questions that you may have are answered.

FAQ:

How long does the procedure take?
For the most part, the endoscopy procedure does not take long at all. For upper exams the procedure lasts 15 to 20 minutes and you will stay in recovery for about an hour. For lower examinations the procedure lasts 20 to 45 minutes, and the recovery time is still about an hour.

What kind of activities can I do after the procedure?
For the rest of the day after the procedure you really need to go home and get some rest. Patients who have the endoscopy procedure and leave from recovery are still under the influence of the anesthesia. The anesthesia makes you forgetful and a little "out of it" for that day. Therefore, you should NOT be driving. Someone should be available to take you to and from the hospital and back home.

How about the pain?
As was stated previously, you will be put under moderate sedation. Very few patients remember anything about the procedure at all.
